Metal Injection Molding(MIM)

Advanced Materials Used In 3C Industry : MIM

The 3C industry uses a very high proportion of MIM-made parts. These products do need to be light, thin, short, and small. The important thing is that most 3C products will be in direct contact with human skin. Products that come into contact with the human body must pass skin sensitivity testing to avoid allergic reactions in people with specific sensitive skin.

Nickel

Nickel is an element that is prone to skin sensitivity, but nickel plays an important role in increasing the strength and ductility of stainless steel. Nickel can cause skin sensitivity so that stainless steel must be used to replace it. Manganese is usually used instead of expensive nickel, but manganese is more harmful to the human body than nickel. Therefore, nickel-free stainless steel was developed.

Nickel-free stainless steel replaces nickel with nitrogen, which allows the stainless steel to maintain good ductility without losing too much strength. Nickel-free stainless steel is usually used in lens rings, headphones, etc. on 3C products. Not only do these products come into contact with the human body, they must also be non-magnetic to avoid magnetic interference on signal transmission. Thus, the nitrogen in nickel-free stainless steel must be strictly controlled, otherwise nitrogen and chromium will form an intermetallic compound, which will cause the nickel-free stainless steel to become magnetic.

Hemp Aging Steel

Hemp aging steel, a high-strength and ductile material, has begun to be used in foldable mobile phones. Currently commonly used materials are required to have a yield strength >1800MPa, a tensile strength >2000MPa, and an elongation >5%. To meet the requirements of passing the drop test.

Titanium Alloys

The common thinking to reduce weight is simply to use alloys with lighter specific gravity, and titanium alloys usually come to mind. However, the price of titanium alloy will increase the price of the product, which is not acceptable to consumers. The next best thing is to reduce the size of the parts, but this is accompanied by a decrease in strength. In order to solve this contradictory problem, alloys with higher mechanical properties must be used. However, most high-strength alloys have high strength but poor ductility. We have to have both, so we look for materials from the aviation industry for the materials we choose.

Summary

The market trend of lightness, thinness, shortness and smallness has severely challenged the mobile phone materials commonly used in 3C products. When flat mobile phones develop into foldable mobile phones, the entire mobile phone structure will become complex and the overall weight will become heavier. Hence, strong metal materials become the savior of folding mobile phones to reduce weight.
